Carlo Goldoni’s Servant of Two Masters is one of the most famous and most popular comedies in the history of world drama and theatre. In this comic plot, as is the case in other typical commedia dell’arte plays, the intrigue derives from typical, conventionally defined characters: misеrly, rich old man, clever maids, their tawdry and arrogant mistresses, silly, yet skilled and experienced servants, benevolent but naive citizens, snooty society, the so-called pillars of the community... Nevertheless, Goldoni further elaborated this simple, conventional plot by introducing a vocal note of social criticism – lust will intertwine with the business interests; everything, including emotions, becomes subject to most basic, banal trading. We recognize the reality of the 18th Century Venice as a reflection of the world we live in today. Goldoni painted some of the most recognizable scenes in literature, so it makes perfect sense that the play, from the first draft in 1743, to the final version, completed ten years later, had been performed countless times on various stages of Europe.
